Let's create a world without dementia
What if we could create a world without Alzheimer's disease or dementia?
Research isn't there... yet. However, there is reason to hope. Researchers are exploring promising ideas worldwide. In Canada, Toronto is at the epicentre of neurodegenerative research. We need to keep investing. Through the Alzheimer Society Research Program we do. I have hope that will pay off.
But what if I told you we CAN create a world without dementia?
And you can help us do more.
On "Date Night" we create a world without dementia. I get to cook. With a generous gift, from someone just like you, we buy some food, rent some dishes, and book a party room that we decorate. I'm part of a team of staff and volunteers that create a space for couples to get dressed up, share a meal, dance, make new friends, laugh - be a couple again. We don't talk about dementia. Sometimes for moments, or even the entire night, the world ceases to be about struggling against a disease that creeps up on you day by day, or about caregiving, managing symptoms or dealing with behaviours. If you're at a Date Night event, it's about living the life you have in that moment, full of possibility and joy, not just making it through.
Through our Active Living program, people living with dementia and their care partners spend the afternoon exploring the Royal Ontario Museum, the Botanical Gardens, grooming horses, among other activities. In each program, we create connections that build networks of care and support around people living with dementia and their care partners. Where family or friends may have retreated or been pushed away by the sudden and abrupt changes demetia can cause, new social circles form. New possibilities emerge for a life that can be lived to its fullest.
Your gift makes that possible.
Our counselling, navigation, and educational services strive to create connections, spaces, places and relationships that break down the barriers dementia begins to impose on living life. Our music program, provides a pathway to reminiscencing, remembering and reconnecting to some measure of joy. There is life to live and we are committed to finding every possible opportunity to live it.
We can also show people how to take some control of the lifestyle risk factors that may prevent dementia. We educate people thorugh the city about the concrete steps they can take to improve brain health and support coginitive aging.
You make all that happen by making a gift to the Walk for Memories.
We've been walking for 30 years to create a world without Alzheimer's or dementia.
Please join us by walking or making a gift! With you, a world without Alzheimer's disease or dementia is possible.
