Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on Thursday, June 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Zoom. This is an opportunity to learn more about the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County and its accomplishments over the past year. You won’t want to miss the special presentation on recent research developments from Dr. Josée Guimond, Interim Director of Research, Knowledge Translation and Exchange, Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Since January 2021, Dr. Josée Guimond has been the Interim Director, Research and Knowledge Translation and Exchange (KTE) for the Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC). Prior to January, she was the Senior Operations Manager, Research and KTE for ASC. Josée has a BSc and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph, as well as an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

The 23rd annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Simcoe County was an incredible success! We want to extend our sincerest thank you to all our Teams, Walkers, Sponsors and the residents of Simcoe County and beyond for your support this year! You walked 10,006 steps for the 10,006 people living with dementia in Simcoe County! You did it for dementia. We honour all of you and those whom you walked for. We had record attendance this year and all the funds raised will support the programs and services we deliver to those living with dementia, their care partners and their families.
We are so excited to launch Catch the Ace—the Alzheimer Society’s first-ever provincial online raffle.
Tickets start at $10 for 3 and provide you with a chance to win BIG in both a weekly prize and a larger progressive jackpot with 50% of all ticket sales going to the Alzheimer Society.
Purchase your tickets and choose an envelope that might contain the Ace of Spades.
Wait until the weekly draw every Thursday at 6:30 PM to see if your ticket is chosen. If it is, you’ll win 20% of that week’s ticket sales. If your card is the Ace of Spades, you’ll also win the Catch the Ace Progressive Jackpot.
If your card is not the Ace of Spades, the progressive jackpot will continue to grow and that card is removed from the deck, increasing the chances of catching the ace next week!
Weekly draws continue until the Ace of Spades is caught.

The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County will be changing its hours of operation for the period June 28th to September 3rd, 2021.
Monday to Thursday - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday - 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Regular hours of operation will resume on September 7th, 2021.
Over the coming weeks, we hope to be in a better position to share our plans in terms of operations in the Barrie and Orillia offices, and the safe delivery of in-person programs and services across Simcoe County. We will keep you apprised as our plans unfold.
The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County’s Education Coordinators are certified Independent Positive Approach to Care® Trainers. The goal of the Positive Approach to Care program is to help care partners build skills, including practical hands-on techniques, to create a positive and supportive relationship for you and the person living with dementia. A two-part workshop will be taking place Tuesdays, June 22nd and 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

How do you thank someone who has been around the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County for over 30 years? Deena-Kay Froese has been involved with the local Alzheimer Society since it was founded in 1985! She was one of the people sitting around Polly Denney’s kitchen table when they said, “We want to start a Chapter in Barrie”. In those early days, Deena-Kay put the newsletter articles together so that the first staff member, Diane Anderson could type them. She served on the Board of Directors early on and again from 2002-2003 and 2014-2021. She has been involved in many volunteer roles: Tag Days, Coffee Break, Gift Wrap, Speakers Bureau, Health Fairs (“Garfield Dunlop’s Seniors Days were the best!”), Walk Planning, Walk Days, Quality Safety Risk Committee, Board Governance, Board Strategic Planning, . . . to name a few.
In her professional life, Deena-Kay was a nurse, and her interest in and commitment to persons living with dementias was sparked early in her career. Deena-Kay continuously educated herself about dementia, and that journey connected her to the Alzheimer Society over and over again. She also taught courses in gerontology, always putting an emphasis on dementia. Deena-Kay worked at the Community Care Access Centre on the Placement Team for many years, arranging for individuals with dementia to be placed in Long Term Care.
Deena-Kay, we thank you for your commitment to those living with dementia and to their care partners. You have contributed in a significant way to the work of the Alzheimer Society in Simcoe County, to the education of young health care professionals, and to the lives of individuals living with dementia, and their care partners. We will miss you at the Alzheimer Society and will treasure the memory of the laughter and shared experience in working with this important group of people. All the best Deena-Kay. And thank you.
