Navigating dementia care isn't easy. Just like snowflakes, every person is unique, and their care must be tailored to fit their individual needs.

When Alicia was diagnosed with dementia and began experiencing behaviour changes, her daughter Judy didn't know what to do. No one really does.

That's where the Alzheimer Society comes in.

For Judy, the Alzheimer Society was instrumental in providing her and Alicia with the support they needed. Through access to tools, resources, and programs, Judy was able to give Alicia the best care possible.

Thank You Marguerite!

The ASSC family would like to congratulate our Volunteer Resources Coordinator, Marguerite Glanfield, on her retirement effective December 1^st, 2022.Anyone who has connected with ASSC in the past 26 years has undoubtedly felt the impact her work has had on our organization. Marguerite has been instrumental in creating our volunteer outreach processes, supporting the creation of our Speaker’s Bureau, championing countless fundraisers, and so much more. Her positive attitude, kind heart, and thoughtful nature have made her an invaluable and beloved member of the ASSC team all these years. We are grateful for her countless contributions to ASSC and will certainly miss her. Thank you, Marguerite, and enjoy your well-earned retirement! Congratulations on your retirement, Marguerite!

Celebrating our Team!

We are pleased to welcome returning and new faces to our organization this fall and sad to say goodbye to a few others. Michelle Menecola has returned as our First Link Care Navigator, helping to guide individuals coping with a diagnosis into internal and external services. Joining us as an Events Coordinator is Jennifer Beatty-Gruer. Jen will be heading up plans for our special 25^th anniversary of the Walk for Alzheimer’s taking place in May 2023! We have a new Enhancing Care Clinician in Kelly Hutton. Kelly will be rolling out CARERS and TEACH programs as developed by the Reitman Centre.

In addition to Marguerite, we are also saying a fond farewell to Sandy MacNevin, Fund Development Officer, who has been with us for the past 3 years, leading the charge to broaden our events and reach in the community. We thank you for your efforts and wish you the best!

Enhancing Care

We are pleased to be offering the Reitmans Centre’s CARERS and TEACH Programs in the New Year. These programs offer therapeutic skills training to family or other unpaid care partners who are giving care to individuals living with dementia. The program provides practical skill-building and emotional support to help care partners deal with the stress and complexities of caregiving and will be facilitated by our new Enhancing Care Clinician, Kelly Hutton.

Both are evidence-based programs developed by the Reitman Centre, Sinai Health System in Toronto and are offered free of charge.

Val’s Story

Valerie Powell has been connected to the Alzheimer Society for many years, first as Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo-Wellington, then through her work as a Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant in Simcoe County and Behavioural Support System Coordinator in North Simcoe Muskoka (NSM). Due to her incredible combination of experience and knowledge, Valerie was recruited to serve on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County. Our Incredible Donors, Dr Rogan and Don Saunders

This month, ASSC is proud to recognize and thank two individuals who have a long history of supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in Simcoe County.

Each year Don Saunders donates to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County in memory of his dear belated wife Joni. Don works tirelessly volunteering for us; his participation in the Speakers Bureau is a performance of its own, engaging the groups he speaks to with his and Joni’s story woven throughout the presentation. His role as the emcee at this year's walk was unforgettable! We honor Joni in memory, and thank you, Don, for all you do for people living with and caring for people with dementia in Simcoe County.

Dr. George Rogan is an ardent supporter of Alzheimer’s initiatives, as a medical professional he understands the need for research and development in areas involving Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. His late wife, Gwen, was a wonderful woman who devoted her life to the care and support of individuals living in Simcoe County. It is in Gwen’s name that a donation was made, allowing her legacy of kindness, care, and compassion to live on. Thank you to the Rogan Family for their generous support. ASSC is incredibly grateful for the support we receive from our community. Thank You!
